SHANNON PUNT

QUESTION OF EXTENDED HOURS FOR USE.

The Horowhenua County Council at its meeting on Saturday received a letter from the Shannon Chamber of Commerce recommending that, when the punt at Shannon was supplied with power, the working hours be extended to 11 pan.

The chairman (Cr. Monk) said that the service really needed extension, but it was difficult to keep a man on continuous work.

Cr. Barber suggested that a charge be made for the use of the punt, the attendant to receive the proceeds. The chairman said that the Highways Board would increase its contribution, if the maintenance of the punt exceeded that of the late bridge. If one man could not run the service, let them put on a double shift. However, if a charge were made after certain hours, perhaps one man would maintain a continuous service. He moved that tho matter and also the question of arranging the hours during which the punt should he charged for, he left in the hands of the works committee. This was seconded and carried.
