WELFARE LEAGUE PRESIDENT
Mr. C. P. SKEBRET’S RESIGNATION
In tendering his resignation as I lesident of the Welfare League, in consequence of his apopintment to the office of Chief Justice of the Dominion, Mr. C. P. Skerrett wrote as follows:
“I sever my connection with the League with some regret. I have always regarded it as an organisation of great value to the country. It voluntarily investigates many important questions affecting the public weal; draws such inferences as commend themselves to it; and prepares the minds of legislators and of the public to consider and deal with .those subjects. Its eduactive value has been considerable and its influence has been most advantageous in causing public attention to be directed to the solution of many of the political and social problems of the day.
“It was with great pleasure that I watched the League gradually gaining the confidence of the people. I attribute this success very largely to the fact that it was bound to no political party and dealt with all questions without reference to the interests of any party or any section of the community. “In saying farewell to the Executive, with whom I have always worked with the utmost cordiality, I should like to say that in their management of the League’s affairs they proceeded on the basis that its influence should not be used for any sectional or private interest. In parting with the permanent officers, I would be very remiss if I did not express my appreciation of the great, and in most cases, specialised services, which they have rendered to the League, and of their untiring zeal and industry in its
cause. “I wish the League continued success in its very useful work.”
