CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The sixth annual championship tournament of the Manawatu Croquet Association was commenced at Palmerston North on Tuesday under rather trying conditions. Light show ers fell throughout the afternoon and made the greens very slow. Games in the handicap doubles concentrated on, but owing to the rain, no matches were played after 4.30. In opening the tournament in the morning, Mr. W. J. Robertson, president of the Association, extended a welcome to visitors. He trusted that the tournament would be as successful as the one held last year. The speaker expressed his pleasure at the large number of clubs represented at the meeting, there being ten.

The clubs represented are as follow: Otaki, Levin, Foxton, Manawatu Northern, Taka.ro, Terrace End Dannevirke, Wodville and Feilding. The results of the games played on Tuesday are as below: —

In tiie Handicap Doubles Mosdam McMurray and Moore (8j) defeated Mcsdames Hodgson and Tapp (7) 2G —14. Play was continued yesterday, when conditions for play had improved and the greens were almost normal. The first rounds in all the events have practically been completed; and in some instances, second round matches have been played. In the B grade section Mrs Moore (10) defeated Mrs James Young (7) 18—15. *

The results of the Half-Hour Tournament, held yesterday are as follows: — Mrs Pearson and Miss Wanklyn tU, Mesdames Bryant, and Downes .4, Woods and Huntley 3J, Miss Speirs and Mrs Parkes 3, Mesdames Owen and Ball 2L On Tuesday Mesdames Pearson and Owen, who put in a challenge against Levin for the • Hornblow Badges, visited that town and played the holders and were successful in their match, winning by 9 points, the score being 20 —17. The Badges have now returned to their home eluli, but Levin intends putting in a challenge for them almost immediately.
