OLD LAND MARK DESTROYED BY FIRE.
*. “Kikiwliemm," tho Atnori meetinghouse which has for some 50 years past Itoeii a familiar landmark at Awapuni, was destroyed by fire at an early hour on Tuesday morning. The outbreak was discovered about 1 a.in., a passer-by observing tlnmes emerging from the rear portion of the building. Although an alarm was sounded, little could be done to smother the outbreak. The building, which was of wood, some Shift, in length by Shift in width, and in an excellent state of preservation despite the age. was m>t occupied at the time of the lire. The last occupant was Ereni To Awe Awe. the aged chieftainess who died recentlv.
The structure, which contained little in the nature of furniture at the time of the fire, was to have been used by the natives for the Christ mas festivities.
The property of the executors of the estate of the late chieftainess, the building was covered by insurance to the value of £3OO. No cause can be attributed for the outbieak, but incendiarism is suspected.
