EDUCATING THE FARMER.

A conference, of men interested in agriculture, was recently held at Marion and it was decided to urge the establishment of an agricultural college in that centre. This has aroused a somewhat amusing protest from the Palmerston morning journal, which deprecates the Marlon proposal as paraehial and talks of a national project. If the settlers of Rangitikei are prepared to find hacking for an agricultural college by all means let them push ahead and if their efforts to make two blades of Rangitikei grass grow instead of one they are not only doing a national service hut are justified in demanding and obtaining national financial support. In our opinion every district should he encouraged by the Government to establish experimental areas where farmers may obtain practical information in the scientific treatment of local soils, etc. The Government afforestation scheme in the sand dune area at Tangimoana could be developed <>n these lines with distinct advantage to the present waste lands along this coast. District enterprise for the pastoral and agricultural welfare of our part of the Dominion should be wholet-heartedly encouraged in the interests of our national progress.
