STORMY WEATHER
The Manawatu River, at the wharf, was the highest that it has been for some years past, last Sunday. At 11 a.m. the water was only two feet from the top of the wharf, while the whole of the Matakarapa swamp was inundated. Taylor’s new whare, across the river, had about four feet of water in it and the other accommodations were in a like plight, the occupants having to seek higher ground with their personal effects. There was a good deal of fresh water in the river but the exceptionally high state of the Manawatu was accounted for by the fact that I lie spring tides were practically a t full and these were backed up by a heavy westerly gale which prevailed throughout the day. During the afternoon the river subsided somewhat, but it is reported that the night tide brought the river up even higher than it was in the morning. Flaxmills along the river bank were flooded out and as a. result work has been temporarily suspended. It was found necessary to l’emove the motor near the Iluia Mill to safeguard it from the flood. There was four feet of water in Mr C. Peterson’s mill. The s.s. Kennedy, which has been unable to leave port owing to the boistrous weather, is still tied up at the wharf. - The Foxton-Lovin road is under water from about half a mile this side of the Government Drain to the Whirokino Bridge, as a result of the overflowing of the drain.
