RUGBY FOOTBALL.

REFEREES FOR JUNE 20. Senior: Foxton v. Weraroa, at Levin, L. Randall. Junior: Awahou v. Tokomaru, A. ■McDonald. Foxton v. Moutoa, at Moutoa, A. George. Thirds: Weraroa v. Foxton, at Weraroa, D. Cole. Fourths: Shannon v. Foxton, at Foxton, S. Head. BEBBINGTOX SHIELD MATCH. At Pahiatua yesterday, Horowhenua played the Bush challenge match for the Beddington Rugby Shield won by Bush from Rangitikei two years ago. After a great tussle, in which the home fifteen had slightly the better of the argument, the game resulted in a bloodless draw. Bush forwards were superior in all departments, except hooking, Ediligton and Corby getting the ball consistently fog Horowhenua. Tuna (lock) did good and so did Rewi Moynihan though at times he showed a tendency to gel off-side. Hunt, the visitors’ full-back, and Taylor (wing-three-quarters) played exceptionally well, while Moses (first five-eights) was the best back on the ground. Lenihnn at half played a solid game. M. Galvin, the Bush skipper, made no mistakes at centre and young Graham, No. 1 five eight, quite justified his inclusion, his talcing, kicking and defensive work all being excellent. B. Udy, at full-back, was most disappointing: on several occasions he made mistakes that might easily have been serious. The defence of the other hacks, on the slippery ground, was all that could be desired. The visiting; captain (Jacob), had nothing on Ryan at wing-forward and of the Bush forwards, Harvey. Dash wood, Oliver and Peters were always conspicuous. Mr J. Ilanaray refereed. Datinevirke sub-union, recently substituted for Manawatu in the Beddington Shield conditions, has challenged for Wednesday next, June 24, and a hot side will visit Pahiatua in quest of the trophy. It includes Xepia, Paewai, Walker and Craven (the best Hawke’s Bay forward on June 3 against Wairarapa). This is good news for Bush enthusiasts, as such a game will give Rugby a big filip in the union, especially if the challengers arc staved off, even with another drawn game. M.D. Times.
