FOXTON GOLF CLUB.
LINKS OFFICIALLY OPENED ON HERRINGTON ESTATE. On Saturday afternoon the official opening ceremony took place of Herrington golf links, so named after the estate on which the links are set out, portion of Messrs Robinson Bros.’ property in the Lady s Mile. The links are ideally situated, being only a short distance both from Eoxton and the Heads. A large number of visitors were present from Levin and Palmerston North and other clubs in the district.
The president (Mr P. E. Easton), in welcoming the visitors, said he* was pleased to see such a large number of visitors present. It was very encouraging for a young club to find that interest was being evinced in it. In referring to the links, iie apologised to the visitors for its rough state, lmt they hoped in a short time to have the ground in good playing order. He said that the club had started off with a clean sheet as far-as debts were concerned. This was mainly due to the fact that Messrs Robinson Bros, had kindly placed the land free of charge at the club's disposal. He also thanked Mr H. T-. Young and Air Galloway (Palmerston North Club) for the assistance they had given the local club in marking out the links.
In responding on behalf of the visitors, Air. IT. L. Young thanked the president for his kind remarks and invitation to he present. They w, re only too pleased to help the ,dit!> in any manner and there was no need for apologies as regarded the links as he considered that, in a very short time, they would he one of the best in the district and would without a doubt become a very popular course. He hoped the club would have a very prosperous year. Plav was then indulged in, mixed four-somes being the order, and a very enjoyable time was spent despite the cold southerly that swept the course. At the conclusion of play afternoon tea was dispensed by Airs P. E. Easton. Rev. \V. 11. Walton thanked the visitors for the assistance they had o-iven local players in learning how to play, and hoped that- in the near future matches would be arranged with tin* local club. AL Young thanked the club for its hospitality and gave some advice to players. In concluding lie ex-
tended a hearty welcome to Eoxton to visit the Palmerston North course when they would have an opportunity to return the hospitality they had received. He was quite sure that in a short time they would sec some champions come from Herrington links. Among the visitors present were Air and Airs L. Seifert, Airs H. Col-lin-on, Airs A. Seifert, Airs Smith, .Miss Ilaggitt, Airs Adams, Airs Wilson, Aliss Wayson, Airs Sultan, Air. Smaile, Air and Alia Harper, Airs Porter, Aliss Marsh, Airs McMillan and Air Callanaii. The links consist of nine holes, and the visitors proclaimed they are one of the best in the district.
