THEFT OF POUND OF BUTTER.
YOUNG X A TICK BEFORE THE COURT. At the local Police Court yesterday, before Messrs M. E. Perreau and I). W. Robertson, J's P., .Tames Kerihana, a young Maori, was charged with stealing a pound of butter from the Majestic -Restaurant on Saturday night. Constable Owen, who conducted the ease for the police, said that on Saturday night, in company with Constable Ryan, he was standing >m the footpath near the Courthouse. Witness saw accused enter ilit* Restaurant. They next saw a shadow on the frosted window of a man leaning over the counter and pocketing some object. Tie then left the restaurant. Witness accosted the limit, who was in tin intoxicated condition and discovered him to he in possession of a pound of butter which was subsequently found lo be missing from the restaurant. Witness pleaded for leniency in this case as the accused was a member of a highly respectable Native family and had commit led the crime while under the influence of drink. It was merely a drunken freak. Accused was prepared to take out a prohibition order. Convicted and discharged provided accused takes out a prohibition order.
