THE LATE PRIME MINISTER.
At last nights’ meeting of the Borough Council the following letter was received from the ActingPrime Minister: — 1 have lo inform you that, at. the instance of His Worship the Mayor the citizens of Auckland have taken the initial steps in what, the Government hope will become a national movement having for its object the raising of a fund for the election of a. suitable memorial to our late illustrious Prime Minister which will commemorate for all time his valuable and distinguished services to the Dominion. To that end 1 now write lo invite the cooperation of yourself and your’citizens in this appeal. It is suggested that subscriptions should be invited. (1) For the purpose of erecting a monument on Mr Massey’s tomb at Point llalswell in Wellington Harbour; and (‘2) To commemorate bv statue or other memorial in Parliamentary grounds his name and public service, and lor the further purpose, if the sums subscribed are sufficient, of planting and beautifying the area of land which has been set apart as his burial ground at Point llalswell. If those are aeepted as the objects of the public subscription, then 1 think it is further desirable that the funds should be expended by direction of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister for the time being, the two speakers the Chief Justice for the time being, and one person to be nominated bv Mrs Massey and her family. In tlie event of any of the officials named being at any time unable to act then the members of the committee shall have full authority. I may further state that the Chief Justice and the speakers of both branches of the Legislature have signilied their pleasure and willingness to act. If this plan of procedure is approved by yourself and those associated with you in (lie initiation of the movement in your municipality, 1 suggest that you make public notifications of the proposals both as to the authorities for expendit-
Kach organisation throughout the country would have its own financial arrangements but I think you will agree that it wilj he better to have a single treasurer, to whom all money should he remitted from time to time by the local committee siiggesled above. Decided to ascertain what action other boroughs were taking in the matter.
