INTOXICATED DRIVER Oh AIOTOR BUS.

Auckland, May 20. A well-known ’bus proprietor named Trewliecla appeared on summons in ihc Magistrate’s Court this morning, when he was charged with being in charge of a motor "bus on Grafton Bridge while in a state of at oxiea tion.

Ah- J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for Trewliecla. in pleading guilty, said that no damage was done either to the ’bus or to pedestrians. Defendant, was a well-known man, wiio owned three large sight-seeing ’buses. Recently it, had been the practice of the Court to inflict fines on motorists who were charged with being in u state of intoxication.

Trewliecla was not very intoxicated, and was not arrested by the police, in view of the facts of the ease and the recent practice of tlie Court in such cases, counsel pleaded that if defendant was sent to prison if would praeUeallv ruin his business. Would the Magistrate inflict a fine in this case? he asked.

M r Boynton, S.M.: I have given warnings times out of number that penalties in such cases would luive to he increased. A motor ’bus is far more dangerous than an ordinary motor ear is—-it cames more passengers. In this ease 1 cannot impose a fine. Defendant will be sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
