LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A slight shock of earthquake was felt at 7.511 this morning.

The borough waterworks gang is at present engaged in laying a water main from Clyde Street at - VOSS the railway line to the Harbour Hoard shed. Ihe local water suplily was cut off this morning for this purpose.

A linal reminder is given of the United Sports’ Associations Hull to be held in the* 5 Town Hail tonight. The Hour is in excellent condition, and an energetic committee has been busy all day wit It decorations and other details. A real good evening is promised patrons tonight. Larkin’s orchestra.

In conversation with our representative this morning, a local resident, who has been keenly interested in the progress of the local port, said he was very pleased to lead the account of an address, given on the port by. Mr Goldinghatn, in Palmerston X. this week. He sakl that to lind such men as Mr Goldingham speakin ill such hopeful strains about ihe port was very refreshing and augured well for its future.

On Tuesday evening the Dixie •Jubilee Singers visited .Foxton, and despite the inclement weather there was a- fair attendance at the Town Hall to greet them. Those present refer to the entertainment as “the best vet" that has visited Foxton. The singing was of a very high standard, and the whole performance was bright and clean, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

This morning our representative was shown the actual garments worn by Norma Talmadge and other actresses and actors in ‘“The Ashes of Vengeance," by the Royal management. The garments are ningnilicently made, and have to be returned to America. For the benefit of local residents, Messrs Hamer and Son are displaying the costumes in Messrs Barr and Tver’s window to-morrow. “The Ashes of Vengeance'’ will be screened at the Koval Theatre next week.

The opening of the Dixieland Cabaret in the Cosmos Theatre, Levin, on Tuesday next, promises to be one of the most; prominent events of ihe dancing season in this tlislnVt. The «*reat feat live oj* the* cabaret will be the lighting effects, which arc bein'-" carried on I by Air \Y. R. Jack, of the Horowltenna Rower Board, who is an artist in this form of decoration, and which will embody a number of novelties not previously seen on this coast. Novelty dunces and jazz effects v.ill’ lie the order of the evening, whilst the faci that the Jazzmanian Orchestra has been secured for the occasion mranters the standard of the music. A limited number of tables on the floor mav he reserved by application to the secretaries, Messrs \V. R. -Jack. F. Bevan, or \V. Phillips, Levin, or tickets may be obtained from this office. Robert Louis Stevens once declared, according to one of his biographers: ‘*.No woman should marry a man who doesn’t smoke," and Stevenson, it must he admitted, knew human nature. Another famous man of letters, Bulwar-Lytton, wrote (see his novel, “What will lie do with it?”) “He who doth not smoke hath either known no greater grief, or refusoth himself the softest consolation next to that which comes from heaven." As to the harmfnlness of the habit, much — very much —depends upon the tobacco. Brands heavily charged with nicotine are best avoided. In that respect and in other respects, our own New Zealand grown tobaccos hold pride of place, because they contain comparatively little nicotine and may therefore be indulged in ad. lib., without affecting nerves or heart. Doubtless that is why they are linding flavour with so many .smokers. They are on sale everywhere, and arc adapted to till tastes. “Kiverhead Gold,” is mild aromatic; "Toasted Xavy Cut,” (Blillffog) a delightful medium and Out Ring No. 10 (Bull’s Head Label) a line full-tinvotirod tobacco.
