Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MAY 7, 1925. EIGHT YEARS OF SERVICE.

To the ill ink in<; person it may seem akin in mineeessnry repeiiiion of a truism when we say that service in the cause of the community i> one that should he commended at nil times. The man who devotes his time and energies in municipal administration is deserving' of the Rest thanks of residents, and this despite the fact that his policy and methods may not always exactly agree with out individual opinions, or our views on borough requirements. To serve a community ill tin l capacity of Mayor or Councillor requires the sacrifice of much time and labour if the office is to lie carried out with any semblance of success, but this fact is mu .always appreciated by those in whose interest s till' service is rendered. The administration of the borough's affairs is an undertaking' of no light tesponsibility. and calls for a great deal of attention and concentration by those in office, that it may be carried out clliciently and economically. and that ratepayers may receive commensurate benelils for their outlay and the progress of the borough he maintained in aecord-,-tnee with legitimate requirements. In the retiring Mayor. Mr -John Oliry'stall, Fox ton Inis had the services of a matt who devoted a great deal of time and iulinite patience in tho oversight of the affairs of the municipality, and while it cannot be said that we have always agreed with his policy or methods, we must admit that lm has served the public faithfully during bis lengthy term, and we feel sure he has the gratitude of ratepayers and residents generally for the devotion lie has shown during the past eigltl years in a position which encourages many kicks and few caresses, hut which in realitv should warrant the best thanks of even those opposed to him. The state of the finances of the borough at the present. time indicate the care with which he and his t'uunciiiurs, together with the ability of the Town Glerk, have administered the borough's affairs, and the only charge perhaps that can be accounted against him is a tendency to be over-economical in some respects. That his judgment and ability im)me n appreciated by I lie majority of the burgesses is evidenced by the lio-i. that he had been returned to oilice over the term mentioned.
