MAYOR EULOGISED.

At the conclusion of business at ast night’s Borough Council nieetug, Ci\ Walker said that as it was he last opportunity they would all lave <>f meeting again at the Council table, he would like, with the permission of the Mayor, to move the following motion: —“That the Mayor he asked to present the Council with an enlarged photo, of himself, to be hung in the Council ('hambers." Cr. Walker then went on to say that he was very sorry that the town was losing the services of so capable a man as the Mavor. He had always carried out the business id the Council in an unbiased manner, and the thanks of the Councillors and ratepayers was due him. Me then moved, seconded by Cr. Bryant, “That it he placed on recerd the ninny years of service tendered by the Mayor (John Clirystall, Esq)., and a wish that he may long he spared to enjoy the rest liom municipal work; and that at some future dale lie may see his v ay clear to again accept the responsibilities of civic duties."

Cr. Brvanl, in seconding the motion, said that he had enjoyed his ten years of service with the Mayor. .Mailers had been discussed, mid duties carried out, in harmony, h was something of a record that so much had been done with so little conflict. Tie-would like to see the Mayor hack in the chair again, mid was sorry the town was losing his services.

Cr. Ross said the Mayor had been ;i capable and very able chairman of the Council. During his term ol office there had been little heat or alter feeling'. He regretted that lie, personally, could not see his way clear to stand again as a councillor, as lie had enjoyed the work in stieli congenial company. JEIc was very sorry that the Mayor was retiring from civic life. Cr. Thompson also expressed reg,ci at the Mayor’s retirement, and

eulogised him, endorsing previous speakers’ remarks. The Mayor had at all times acted in the best interests of all. He also expressed regret that so few councillors were seeking re-election. Cr. Parkin endorsed the sentiments of previous speakers, and expressed a desire to see the Mayoi back again. Cr. Adams also paid Haltering tribute to the Mayor, and said the only trouble they had experienced was the lack of money. MY Trueman (Town Clerk) said i hat perhaps he had been more m contact with the Mayor than anyone else, and he was very sorry that he was seeking retirement. In no council in the Dominion did there exist such cordial relations between iiu- employees and employers as existed in Eoxton, and he considered that in itself a tribute to the Mayor, who had at all times lostcred that spirit. The Mayor returned thanks for ihe kindly remarks made by the ('mine iHors, and in conclusion urged upon both -aspirants for Mayoral honoms (Cr. Bryant and Mr M. E. Perreau) to allow themselves to iioih he nominated as Councillors, as if they did not do so the town would lose the services of a good man.
