POLICE V. LINDEGREEN. FINE OF £IOO IMPOSED. Reserved decision was given by Mr E. Page, S.AL, in the Wellington Magistrate’s ■Court yesterday in a ease in which Die police proceeded against Carl Petersen Lindergreen, „|' Feather.ilon St., secretary of the Dominion Sportsmen’s Association. Two of the charges alleged that the defendant had printed documents containing statements as to the tola lisa tor dividends paid oil investments on the tolalisator at races at Palmerston X. on 29th and 30th December. Further charges set out that “On 31st December, at Nelson, defendant did aid, assist, counsel, and procure Alfred George Clements in tlie commission of an offence, punishable on summary convictions, in that Alfred George Clements, at. Nelson, on 31st December, did make a bet of 10/- upon the result of the Wa.ira.rapa Cup, run at Taulievenikau on .Ist, January, 1925. He (Clements) agreed to pay to Victor Robert Hawkcs —the other party to the diet;—should he win the same, a sum of money, the amount of which would lie dependent upon the result of the working of the totalisator on the race.” At the hearing, the case for the prosecution was conducted by Chief Detective Kemp, and the defendant was represented by Mr M. Myers, K.C. with him Mi’ W. Perry. 'l’lie Magistrate said he was of the opinion that defendant should be convicted. He imposed the maximum penalty of £IOO. On the application of Mr Perry, security of appeal was fixed at the amount of the fine and costs, plus £ls 15/-. GISBORNE BOOKIE FINED. Benjamin Bennett, with several aliases, was fined £3O at Gisborne yesterday, for bookmaking at the Ruatorea races. His counsel described it as bis client’s first venture. Through inexperience he met with misfortune and the Natives were considerably excited. Accused by slipping away “escaped being made the subject of a cannibal feast,” said counsel.
