WIDOW'S FALSE DECLARATION

Hastings, Last Night. In tile Magistrate's Court this morning, a widow, an epidemic pensioner, with fwo children, was convicted of making a false declaration regarding her earnings. The Magistrate said a person obtaining pensions by false declarations was as much a thief as if she picked someone else’s pocket. The Department did not ask for a penalty in the present case, but if any future offenders were convicted of obtaining pensions fraudulently, they would stand a very good chance of being sent to gaol without the option. Accused was convicted and her pensions certificate cancelled.
