ARTILLERY CAMP.
The final two shots from the 60pounders at the artillery camp were fired at about 11 o’clock last night The reports and vibrations appeared to he much more intense than during the day. It is to be regretted that, a public notification was not injade to the effect that the guns were to be fired, which would have lessened the shock to nervy people, who did not appreciate the disturbance. -V number of the artillery camp officers and friends spent a most enjoyable time on a launch trip on the river last night. The health of the men in camp lias been good, although the use of the artesian water at first caused the men a little discomfort. Both the officers and men speak in the highest terms of praise of tlu camp site at the racecourse, and splendid conveniences placed at their disposal by .the Foxton Racing Club. The weather, too, has been perfect for Hie catnip. The Y.M.O.A. canteen is supervised by Mr F. Bennett, who has done much to cater for the men’s comfort and enjoyment. “Freddy” is u host in himself and will eonliime in charge' daring the coming week with the Hawke’s Bay Battery. The conduct of the men off duty in ihe town has been exemplary, Mol they have spent a most enjoyable time at the various places of amusement, and many have been entertained in private homes. The camp concert on Thursday night was a most enjoyable function, and the programme submitted was thoroughly appreciated. In this connection, special praise is due to Chaplain Captain Walton for his efforts in organising the function. In fad hi' has taken a real live in-Iric.-I in the men, and has done much to keep them entertained in their spare time. ’|'| u . public were afforded an opportunity of seeing the big engines of destruction in action yesterday afternoon under service condition-. Tim guns were situated in a plantation about a chain from the road. The battery was connected with field telephone from the observation post, about three-quarters of a mile distant, and beyond that a-
gaiu was another outpost. The handling of the guns by the men indicated a thorough knowledge of what was required of them in the discharge of their several duties. Rive or six miles away to the north west' was the objective, out of sight. After the shot was fired the result was quickly communicated, and range and elevations adjusted. The whole of what was taking place was communicated to the public per megaphone. After six rounds had been tired the public were invited to proceed to the observation post and witness subsequent, erplosions of tlie shells on the objectives.
Among those present at the shoot were Mr J. Keeble, of Levin, who was associated with military matters in this district in the early days, and who still retains a keen interest in matters of defence; Miami Mrs F. .J. Nathan (Mayor and .Mayoress of Palmerston N), the Mayor )Mr J. Chrystall) and Cr. A. X. Smith; AY. E. Barber (Chairman of the Racing Club Committee), D. Christie (President of the local Chamber of Commerce), and other prominent and local public men and their lady friends. Dr. Wyllie was on duty with the battery. At the conclusion of the shoot, the officers entertained the public at afternoon tea, when occasion was taken by Colonel Bowles and Captain Fenton to thank the Racing Club and citizens for kindness and hospitality to the men. Messrs Barber and Chrystall acknowledged the compliments. The guns were entrained last night and this morning. To-day the (ith Field Battery will arrive and go into camp.
