MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the Alanawatu-Oi’oua River Board was held at Palmerston N. on Thursday. Those present were: Alessrs W. S. Carter (in the chair), H. Akers, A. Seifert, A. W. Akers, Af. K An Arson and B. G. Gower. Air Hands, of Mangawhata, waited on the. Board, asking for an assurance that the Board did not require him to cut bare the willows on his property, instead of to a reasonable height. On a nearby property, (his extreme course had resulted in Hie hanks falling in, and in two cases, the banks would have to be renewed. The engineer, Air F. C. Hay, staled that in the cases cited, the owners of the land had exceeded instructions, and had cut their willows bare.

The chairman stated that Air Hands had cut his willows satisfactorily, and nothing more was required. In presenting his monthly report, the engineer, Mr F. C. Hay slated that in regard to surveys, 91 plans had been received and these were being checked, traced and printed, t. was expected to have copies complete by the end of the month, sufficient to make a start on detail estimates. This progress was being made by the Board doing work that was part of the contract, but which did not relieve the contractors of any part of the contract, but (limited any more delay in getting plans suitable for design to a matter of a few weeks. Certain field work which bad been omitted by the contractors was under way. Classification work was finished on December 20, and approved bv the Board. “The small flood of December 20, reaching 10 feet on the Fitzherbert gauge, together with local water, flooded Koputaroa badlly owing to the break in Bryant’s bank, made by the November flood. Ratepayers in this sub-division are taking steps to form themselves into a drainage board. I inspected the break recently and alsq attended a meeting at Koputaroa, when the above subject was discussed, and wish to report that in my opinion tlio step contemplated is one which should commend itself to the River Board. The Koputaroa sub-division now depends for protection entirely on individual efforts and a uniform degree of security is not. possible until a. body is formed to look after the banks.”
