TRAGIC DOUBLE SUICIDE.
GIRL OF 14 AND MAN OF 23 YEARS. • s ’ Invercargill, Last Night. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding ’ the deaths of Mary -Ann McKenzie (14) and Andrew Sydney Sands (23), whose bodies were found in the Dunsdale stream on Sunday, was conducted at Hedge Hope to-day. ~ 'Mary McKenzie, mother of the deceased girl, said her daughter left home on the evening of December 13, after being chastised on her return from a message to Sands. 'Ambrose Jesse Sands said the girl stopped at his. house on December 13 and also on December 14. On the following morning she left the house at. about 7 o’clock, accompanied by his son, and neither was seen again until the bodies were recovered. William Hocking, farmer, said he was strolling along the banks of the Dunsdale stream on Sundav afternoon, when he saw two bodies lying in about 12 inches of water. He at' once advised the police. Adam Kerse, police constable, said he proceeded to Dunsdale on receipt of a message from the previous witness, and recovered the bodies. ' Sands’ arms were around the girl and his wrists were tied together with a piece of her dress. The bodies were in that position when discovered. The verdict was that the deceased Mary Ann McKenzie and Andrew Sydney Sands committed suicide at Hedgehope, between December 16 and 18.
