HOLY YEAR.

GORGEOUS CEREMONIAL. Rome, December 28. The opening of the Holy Door was a gorgeous ceremonial., The cardin-j als wore long red silk trains and white fur caps, and the Oriental patriarchs- wore jewelled headdresses. The Pope covered with a golden mantle, and seated in a chair carried by twelve bearers, ascended the throne while the pontifieial march was played. He descended holding a cross in one hand and a lighted candle in the other, and knelt at the threshold of the door, the choir meanwhile singing the “Te Deum.”

Beside the throne was a gold dish bearing a golden hammer, sponges, and holy water, with which to remove the bits of masonry from the door.

The Pope struck thrice with the golden hammer, and the wall collapsed, revealing the jubilee door. An immense crowd waited at St. Peter’s Square, but the ceremony was hidden from them by velvet curtains. Then they poured in through the newly opened door, each kissing the door post. The city is crowded with visitors from all over the world, and a million are expected during the Holy Year. ' .
