PILFERING FROM RAILWAY.
EMPLOYEE ADMITS THEFTS. Gisborne, Last Night. The Magistrate’s Court yesterday presented the appearance of a warehouse collection, comprising groceries, confectionery, sacks of flour and sugar, cases of whisky and schnapps, tobacco, etc., the property of (lie N.Z. Railways. The goods comprised cases stolen while in transit between local warehouses aud country stores. Bazil Goodwin Breeze (19) employed in the stationmaster’s office, and George Delvin Byford (44), employed by the Public Works Department, were charged that on November 13th they stole three cases of groceries, a case o fnails, two hags of sugar, one bag of flour, three cases of whisky and one ease of schnapps, value £SO, also, on October Bth, stealing groceries value £36, both being the property of the New Zealand Railways. Goods sent to the Railway sta - tion had been left in trucks all night, and were missing on arrival at their destination next day.
After a lengthy hearing, Breeze pleaded guilty and was committed foi sentence. Byford pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. Breeze was further charged with stealing jewellery and bed-linen from a local hotel, pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. Byford, charged with receiving portion of the, jewellery and portion of the.bed-linen,, knowing..the same to have been dishonestly obtained, pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial, hail being paid in self at £250 and one surety of £250 or two at £125.
