BIG FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
MUCH. DAMAGE IN ALBERT ST. Auckland, November 16. A disastrous fire occurred last night, resulting in the destruction of the premises of Messrs Guthrie, Bowron and Co., Ltd., oil and colour merchants, in Albert St. The building, which was of four storeys, made a spectacular sight as it went up in flames. The adjoining premises of Messrs Cooke and Co., wine and spirit merchants, were damaged extensively by water. The brigade had a strenuous task in fighting the flames and for three hours (he fire had the upper hand. A number of firms had offices in i lie building, those burned out being Messrs Guthrie, Bowron and Co., Stanley Neweombe and Co., wholesale stationers, John Dickson and Co., Ltd., 0. A. Bond and Co. Ltd., hosiery warehousemen, Auckland Millinery Factory, X.Z. Textiles Ltd. Edward Best and Co., manufacturers’ agents, and Hunler and Sons Ltd., clothing manufacturers. In addition Messrs Cooke,and Co., wine and spirit merchants, in the adjoining premises, sustained losses of -took due to the collapse of a wall which clashed through the roof of their building. The total damage is estimated at about £60,000.
