SPORTS’ QUEEN FUNCTIONS.

The week-end Carnival proceedings -were enlivened by the appearance of the local Band, who turned out and assisted the Sports arrangements. The Sports day began with the opening of the shop in Main St. til 8 a.m., followed by a fancy-dress football match on Easton Park. The team, headed by the Band, marched through Main St. and on to the Hark, where a good deal of fun eventuated. The Mock Court also created some amusement, but fines were not rigorously imposed. The Sports Committee, however, report a successful day.

The Sacred Concert at the Town Hall on Sunday night, under the auspices of the Sports Committee was well attended. The programme had been carefully selected, and the audience, showed their approval by repeated recalls. The Eoxton Band opened with a selection entitled “Hypathia,” which was rendered with exceptionally good expression, under the baton of Mr 4. Golder. The brass quartette, which contributed to the programme later in the evening, is also deserving of special praise. The players were Messrs J. Golder, Betty, Ebbett and Osborne. Mrs T. Davey, who gave songs at the piano, undoubtedly merited the unstinted applause acctorded her. The youthful Maori soloist, Tawhiti Hirini, displayed his exceptional tenor voice to great advantage in “I Passed by Your Window,” for which he received quite an ovation. Other artists who assisted were Mr A. Smith, whose, rendering of “Tliora” was much appreciated, and Misses Doris Morgan, Chalk, H. Morgan, Messrs Hinds, Walls, Simmons and the Native Quartette. The accompaniments were played by Misses Healey, E. Patterson, and Mrs Davey, and Messrs Walls and Simmons.
