CRIME IN AUCKLAND.

GRAND JURY RECOMMENDS FLOGGING.

Auckland, Tuesday. AI the Supreme Court criminal sessions, Mr Justice llerdman, addressing the grand jury, said ihe cnicndar included ' Iwo charges of murder, and three of rape, two of indecent assault, two offences against males, t wo of carnal knowledge and fiic of incest. However, there was no cause for disquietude, as there was a tendency for special forms of crime that made their appearance periodically. He hoped that many sessions would pass before a list would he submitted in which the charges were characterised by such obscenity. Speaking of the attack on a woman in Albert Park, the judge said the accused on his own admission, was a sexual maniac. The charge of murdering his child against the man Keogh was a pathetic case, and it might be urged that he was insane. That was a question for the common jury. His Honour also made a brief refen nee to the charge of murder of Louis Short in the Aurora Hotel. The grand jury returned true bills in the two murder charges and carried the following rider on completion of their duties: —

“That in view of the bestiality shown in many of the cases presented to the grand jury, it be a recommendation that the judge’s power to inflict punishment of flogging be more frequently exercised.”
