INFANTICIDE.
YOUNG WOMAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. . Dunedin, October 28. The inquest concerning the death of a male infant found in a drawer in a housemaid’s room at the Grand Hotel, concluded ibis morning. As the result of evidence given, a warrant was issued for (he arrest of the mother, Marguerita Elizabeth Hand, charged with.murder. The medical evidence showed that the infant’s neck was encircled with a piece of clothing, tightly constricting it. The coroner’s finding was that'death i-esuitod from axphyxia caused bv strangulation. After the conclusion of ihe inquest, the Police Court resumed its sitting and Hand was charged with having murdered lu-r newly-born male child on October 18 last, accused was represented by Mr Hanlon. Evidence given by each witness at the inquest was read over and admitted as evidence in the murder charge. Accused reserved her defence and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The Magistrate agreed that under the circumstances no surety would he demanded, but accused would have to remain under the control of the female probation officer.
