BAND CARNIVAL.
VISIT BY WANGANUI HIGHLAND PIPE. BAND. The Wanganui Highland Pipe Band visited Foxton for the weekend at the invitation of the Fire Brigade Queen Carnival Committee and aroused considerable local interest and enlivened the town for the holiday. The visitors arrived by motor ears on Saturday afternoon. Main Street was belfaggcd in their honour and they were accorded a civic welcome by the Mayor (Air •iohn Chrvsiall) in front of tbe Carnival Office and the ‘‘freedom of the city" was conferred upon I hem. Before the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, they played a stirring march in Main St.'to the intense delight of a large crowd which assembled to meet them. In the evening the pipers paraded Main St. and again attracted a large crowd. On Sunday the visitors were taken for an up-river excursion. Yesterday they enlivened the town and inarched lo Easton .Park, prior to the Soccer football match, Wellington Has Works Employees v. foxton. In the afternoon the'Pipers were mtored to Shannon where the local public were entertained and they subsequently were taken on to Ahmgahao where they were keenly interested in the power staI ion. LAST NIGHT’S CONCERT^ At the Town Hall last night a Caledonian concert was given before a large and keenly appreciative audience. The programme was opened with a. selection by the Blue and White orchestra. The selections by I lie Pipers included some stirring marches. A diminutive piper,_ Jack Allen, aged 1 1 years, with a dimimil;ve set of pipes, was recalled for his masterly manipulation. Pipe-. Major R. Thomson also had to respond to his selection. Aliss Lena Allan scored a great success in her song “Caller Herrin," in character, and met with an equally battering reception with her rendition “Hamo of Aline." The Scotch and Irish dances by Aliss Doris Nixon fairly brought down the house. Aliss Bessie O’Neill's mandolin selections were keenly appreciated. Mr Baltin contributed some humorous Scotch songs and AH McCallam created roars of laughter with his Scotch sermon. Air and Aliss Hambly contributed a duet and Air Hambly a vocal item. Aliss Alavis Alurhead. of Palmerston N., contributed a pianoforte solo. Tbe Alayor was in good voice and sang a spirited National song. Mr Chus. Simmons was equaL ly successful with his monoeelloist items. At tljg conclusion the Mayor thanked the performers on behalf of the Brigade and hoped they would again visit Foxton. The visitors were entertained at supper and I lie entertainment concluded with a dance which was well patronised. The following are the names of thi Pipers:— Pipe-Alajor R. Although the visit of the Pipers was oil behalf of the Fife Brigade Queen candidate (Miss Alavis Dunn) the other candidates benefitted by tin- effort.
The visitors, spoke in terms of praise of the hospitality which had b.eu extended to them and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
