OPENING OF SHANNON GREEN
Yesterday afternoon Shannon green was officially opened by the acting pres il.-nt, Sir W. Clayton, in the presem-c of a large gathering ot visiting and local bowlers and ladies. Visiting rinks were present from Otaki, Levin, Foxton and Palmerston N. Tn opening the green. Mr Clayton extended a hearty welcome to visitors. and proceeded to refer to the desirability of instituting a veterans’ contest in the Centre for the purpose, of providing an interest for [flayers advanced in years. Of late years the younger men had invaded the howling greens and predominated the Centre tournament, and he made the suggestion that a cup or some such trophy should be provided for these old players. This year was the twentieth anniversary of the Shannon Club and lie (Mr Clayton) had especial pleasure in welcoming members of the Palmerston N. Club, as that was the parent clttb as far as Shannon was concerned. Reference was made to the Kinniberg Feathers and a plea voiced to ihe effect that more interest should be shown.
Owing to the recent rains the green was somewhat heavy and spongy, but nevertheless a very enjoyable afternoon was spent by bowlers present.
