SOLDIERS HOUSES AND PROFITEERING.
Wellington, September! The question as to whether profil- * leering is going on in respect tb solders’ houses in the cities was suggested in the course of a discussion when a representative of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers Assn, interviewed Mr Massey to-day regarding Government loans for the erection of soldiers’ houses in Dunedin. Mi- P. S. Anderson, in reply to Mr Massey said he did not know of any speculation'in Dunedin. Air Massey said it had been reported to him that there was nothing to prevent returned soldiers from .applying to the State Advances Department -for loans. He was not going to aliow the purchase of any more houses by soldiers or any one else. Hon. A. D. McLeod said advances to soldiers last year for houses amounted to £540,0U0. During the last quarter alone 117 soldiers’ houses out of 187, had been transferred to civilians, having- been sold by soldiers, the profit being up to £SOO. He had instances in which there was a profit up tb <9OO,
