THE ALL BLACKS. MET WITH BANDS AND FLAGS. London. September 3. The All Blacks had a civic reception at Newton Abbot. A hand headed a procession through cheering crowds. The streets werp festooned with flags. The team indulged in light practice before a large crowd and a battery of cameras.
They were overwhelmed with messages of welcome. (Newton Abbot is an old-fash-ioned Devonshire market town of about 14.000 population. It is situated oji the estuary of the Teign and was the headquarters of the All Blacks in 1005).
THE LEAGUE MOVEMENT. Says the Levin Chronicle. — “The initial attempt to inaugurate the League code in this district was not very encouraging to the promoters, judging by the quality of the game at FOxton last week. The greatest difficulty was experienced, when the lime came, in getting teams together, young players hesitating before taking the step which would out them off from the Rugby game. It is a serious step which young players are asked to take. League is a good game and but for the fact that there is no outlet for it beyond Australia, would probably be more popular. The fact remains, however, that as things are. with no possibility of ever having the game taken un in-Thigland or on the eontinent. where football is becoming increasingly popular, a youth going into League definitely cuts himself off from any possibility of attaining the goal of football endeavour — inclusion in an All Black English touring team. All players cannot be All Blacks, but the local players do more than lose their chance of becoming such. They definitely eommit themselves t<i isolation in a district in which nothing but Rugby is played, with a big possibility of the movement failing and leaving them with nothing to do, but. io sue out their reinstatement 1" rugby from the N.Z. R.U., or else to definitely retire from the game. Whatever may be said for the chances of League in the cities, a country club which adopts the code is definitely a pioneer in a movement by no means certain of success. Should it succeed their honour will no doubt be correspondingly great but it. must be admitted that the risk is by no mea.ns small.
