HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.

FOXTON MEMBERS PROTEST

AGAINST ROUGH-PLAY.

At tile ordinary meeting of the management committee of the above, held in Levin last Tuesday evening, MV 11. Hutchins entered a protest against the manner in which the Fox-toii-Wernroa game last Saturday had been conducted. Several players had approached him stating * that they had come to see a football match and not a free fight. The referee had had no control of the game. He, the speaker, had never eompplained of a referee before, but in this case this man was absolutely incompetent.

Mr S. Austin supported this, stating tli.it the game developed into a Ponnybrook. Free lights were going on all over the field and the crowd weiv. worked up to such a pitch that the police had the greatest difficulty in keeping the spectators from in\ndiug the field and attacking the players.

.Mr-O’Rourke staled that the time bad come to consider the revision of the appointment, of referees. A recommendation had been sent in to the Referees Association asking tlmt local referees be not appointed L> games in which their own clubs were interested. In Ota.ki a man had been appointed who was objectionable to the Utaki Club and the

suin' tiling had happened in Rahui, where a man well known as a pax-ti-aii of a certain club had been ap!>i>inled iu referee four games. The liel'eivis Association had apparently thrown out the suggestion without consideration and it was quite rbuc ibn! the Union took a hand in miming the Referees’ Association, t in' Referees' Association had run lhe Cinon long enough and it was time an alteration was made. After discussion of the Foxton ini',dent, Air Austin moved that a iis ommendation be sent to the Reivices Association that the referee in question be not appointed again !••■ control a senior or junior within the Union. —Carried.

It was decided that the Junior ivp>. play Manawatu as a curtainraiser to the {Senior HorowhenuaMamiwatu game in Palmerston N.
