BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

APPEAL TO THE COUNCIL FOR

ASSISTANCE

At last night’s Borough Council meeting a deputation consisting of Messrs Perreau and Christie wa.itou on the Council on behalf of the Be,-i u I ifying- Soeiel y.

C. Smith introduced the deputation.

Mr Perreau (president of the Society), said that the Society would bke the Council to make a donation of £ls towards the expenses of a caretaker in connection with the Society’s work. At present this expen-

The Alayor said he was in sympathy with the granting of a donation.

Cr. Parkin said he would like to see the lupins removed from Easton Park.

Cr. Adams said that if a grant, were made he wanted to see the money spent; properly. If t he work was not done right it was money wasted, lie could take Councillors along Park St. and “pull up trees planted in that street with his two fingers.”

Ur. Bryant, suggested that the Council give the Society a picture benefit instead of a donation. By this menus they would get anything from £ls to £2O. The Council pay all expenses. Mr Perreau pointed out fhat a man was at, present engaged in removing lupins from Easton Park. He also said that great care was being taken with the planting and the more money the Society got the better the work could be done. It was decided that a donation of £lO be made to the Beautifying Society and that the net proceeds of a picture benefit be granted towards the donation.
