BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in Ihe Council Chambers last night. WATER A NO DRAINAGE REPORT The waterworks foreman reported as follows: — During Ihe monfh nine hydrants have been fitted with new rubbers, new parking has been placed into Ihe stuffing boxes of (hree valves and several cisterns repaired. One householder has been connected up with the high pressure water supply and -IS hours has been spent is cleaning out gas services. The main • k-uance at the pumping- station was as under: Coal used, one ton 19ewt. £5 11/4: oil, 1A gals., 6/9; wages £7 17/3, miscellaneous 9/3. a total of £l4 4/7. Seventy-four hdurs were spent pumping water and 985,000 gallons pumped at a cost of 4.]d per 1,000 gals. Maintenance at the waterworks was £2 7/-, do., drainage,

£3 12/4, by-laws £4 5/-. Eighteen hours were spent, on outside work, producing £2 2/3. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported as follows:

During the month the road staff has been employed on the following works: Carting and spreading metal and cinders on Russell St., fascining sand drift and planting iee plant in Brown St.; weeding water tables in Cook St., and Avenue Rd.; carting metal and patching ruts in Lady’s Mile, Park and Robinson Sts. .discharging Belmont screenings to Council yard, and general maintenance work. The whole of the Belmont' metal has now cotne to hand with the exception of two or three trucks of the fine screenings. Tile metal put on Russell St. is now settling down very well. The traffic keeping to one line has caused the road to become rutted but the staff is levelling up tlie.se ruts as they appear. During the month the Mnnawatu County Council’s road grader was employed in grading Park, Robinson. Spring and Thynne Sts., and Lady’s Mile and Norbiton Rd. Unfortunately the weather was very wet just after the grader commenced operations and this made the condition of these road* somewhat unpleasant for a few days. The staff is now engaged in weeding the various water channels. A recommendation was made for a footpath along Russell St. on the western side. Sufficient coke ash, etc., being on hand to do this work from the Bowling Green corner to Robinson Si.

There was a short discussion on the question of laying down a footpath in Russell St., it being considered that a path of some description was necessary as there was a great deal of heavy traffic on this road. The report was adopted. TENDER.

Decided (hat Messrs Evans Bros, tender for removing saml cutting according to specifications along the south side of Avenue Rond, for the sum of £fl 2/0 he accepted and that the question of Union St. he referred to the Manawatu County Council asking payment of half cost of such work. Crs. Ross and Bryant: voted against the motion. " LIBRARY.

It was decided that £4O worth of new books he purchased and that an increase of 2/- per week he granted the librarian. The Clerk reported that the subscribers to the library were now on the increase, there now being 70 odd already on the books. ELECTRIC POWER.

Decided that, the Council accept (lie offer for supply of current, from (lie Horowhenun Power Board, as outlined in their letter, and that, the offers already received for motors he submitted to the Board; also that any general reduction by the Government (o the Power Board be shared with the Council. It was divided on the motion of Cr. Ross that endeavours be made to dispose of the present suction gas producer etc., at tie pump house, delivery made after electric motor has been installed. Decided that the Town Hall be rewired to conform with the Power Board’s standaxd~aiid also that of the Underwriters’ Association on the.pfesent 110 Volt circuit and that '' definite quotations be obtained for the work, the present lamps and fixtures to be used where possible. lu connection with the above, the Mayor outlined a scheme whereby the Town Hall would be rewired in accordance with the motion, hut the present gas engine would still be used to produce the power. By keeping to this scheme a saving of £OO per annum would eventuate. Cr. Walker said lie could not see where there would be a saving of £6(l lie thought “they were degenerating by not accepting the Power Board current for the Town Hall.” The Mayor: We are doing very well. We are takiug the power for lighting etc. in the borough. Cl'. Walker voted against the motion. GEN ERAL. Decided to procure 40 3-i't. bamboo cleaning rods for sewers at 5/-. each from Messrs A. and T.'Burt. Decided to procure a coir mat for _ the foot of the stairs at the Town Hall. It was decided to remove one of the speed notice boards at the north end of the town, and use same for a rest-room notice board. COKRESPONDEN CE was read and dealt with as follows: From the Willard Home, asking for a donation to that Home. —Declined. From the Blanket Society, Foxtou, thanking the Council for douatiou. —Received. From the Fire Board, asking the

Council to clear the bases of all fire plugs within the borough.—Referred to (he Road Foreman.
