TRYING OUT THE ALL BLACKS.
NORTH ISLAND PROBABLES AND POSSIBLES. Wellington. Last Night. The S. (inti people who attended (he Athletic Park to-day to see the Possibles-Probables of the North Island battling for places in the All Blacks witnessed perhaps the finest game seen there since the war. There was not a great deal of combination. hut ihe players made up for lhis by their fine individual efforts. The work in the set scrums, especially by the Possibles was poor and it might he put down to the fact dial players were too eager to catch the selectors’ eyes in the loose. In the Possibles back line Walters look the place', of Sinclair and V. Badeley the place of M. Nielioils, win* is suffering from an injury. Porter, who is also on the injured list, was replaced by Beilis, and Moynihun tilled the gap caused by the absence of Cupples. The score 23-21 was a fair indication of the teams. Of the fullbacks Nepia was the more confident and gave a better display. His pot was a line piece of work. Lucas and Hart were the most impressive of the wings. Svenson was not in the same class as Brown, who opposed him. Paewai and Mill combined splendidly. Johnson was a failure, while Cook and Badeley who seemed to understand each other’s play displayed speed, resource aud initiative. Cook also showed up well on defence. Wright, like Mill, is an excellent passer from the scrum.
Of the Possible forwards West 'Q. Donald and Pringle stood out in the loose and worked hard throughout. Harvey, although good in the loose, did'not hold the scrum well in the light. Beilis was outshadowed by J. Donald, the opposing wing forword. C. Brownlee may not have been the best forward in the held, but there was certainly no one better. His brother with Irvin Mac Nab and Lomus worked hard from start to Jinish.
fn the lirst spell tries were scored for the Po*ssibies by Svenson and Q. Donaid, while McLean kicked two penalty goals. The Brownlee brothers each scored a try for the Probables, while Nepia converted one and kicked a penalty goal.—Possibles Id, Probables li. In the second half Q. Donald and .Lucas scored for the Possibles, while McLean converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Hart and J. Donaid scored for the Probables and potted a goal.
