ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR SHANNON.
Shannon is the first town to receive electric current from the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme. On Friday evening last 139 dwellings and business premises and the streets were illhminated by electric light. This current is derived from the steam plant at Mangaore which has been used for supplying light to the whole of the works. The effect • when the streets and business places were all illuminated was very fine and in marked contrast to the dim. twinklings of the past. In honour of the event the Mayor addressed an open-air meeting of citizens at the Soldiers’ Monument and subsequently. presided over a celebration in the Council Chamber at which • the Councillors, the engineer in charge of the works and engineer and clerk of the Horowhenua Power Board were in attendance.
