The gas manager reported as follows: — “The apparatus has been working quite satisfactorily during the past month. As requested by the Mayor, I cut down the street lamps by two hours, owing to the strike, but am glad to state that I had about ten weeks’ supply of coal on hand. Mr Carey has now settled down at the works and is giving every satisfaction. There has been a good deal of outside work done during the month. There is a big demand for coke at present.”—Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported that during the mouth the road staff had been engaged on the following work: Cleaning drains, Flitter, Coley, Union, Purell and Baker Sts., carting metal and patching, ruts Union, Johnston and Park Sts., and Sandon Rd., weeding water channels in Main and Clyde Sts., putting in culvert for J. P. Smith Esq. Repairing culvert Main St., carting sand and effecting repairs to footpath after

Electric Power Board and maintenance work. A start has also been made in the top dressing of Main St., but the break in the weather has hindered this work just as the Belmont chips came to hand. We.may be able to put in about two more days at this work so as to get the worst part of the street done and leave the remainder until a more suitable time. The road metal is now arriving and is being put. on Russell and Johnston Sts. I am blinding this with road dust but. we shall need clay as well. All the clay in Victoria Park is finished so a supply will have to be procured from elsewhere. It is practically essential that we have clay with the Belmont metal. The drain cleaning is completed with the exception of one or two lengths where the property owners have not quite finished grubbing noxious weeds. This is ouly a matter of a day or two. In moving the adoption of the report, the Mayor said that it was essential to have clay blinding with Belmont metal. He suggested that ' a supply be procured from the properties adjoining Beach Road if possible. The report was adopted. GENERAL. it was decided to grant permission to Mr H. Osborne to construct a wooden coal-shed at the rear of his premises in Maim St., in the brick area. Decided that Mr Parker be paid the sum of £lO due to him as holiday pay. Decided that in future employees of the Council entitled to annual holidays shall take such holidays as they fall due or as near then as possible. No payment will be made for holidays not taken. An application for rise in salary by the gas manager was refused. It was decided to defer this matter for six months when the whole of the borough staff is to be re-organ-ised. A letter was received from the kit ate Advances Office stating that owing to demands made on the funds of the* office the Department is unable to entertain any fresh applications for loans until such time as those already in hand are disposed of. —Decided to write to the Prime Minister in connection with raising loan to complete sewerage work. An application for the free use of the meeting room in the Tdwn Hall, once a month, by the Chamber of Commerce, was refused.
