COUNCILLOR’S THREATENED RESIGNATION.
“SHABBILY TREATED” AT “DEVILLED MEETING.” At the conclusion of the business at last night’s Council meeting 1 , Cr. ‘Bryant said that he wished to resign from all committees on which l.c was a member. This news came rather as a bomb-shell to most Councillors and in explanation Cr. Bryant said that Ik considered that he had been “shabbily treated” by the Mayor at a finance committee meeting. At that meeting the Mayor had asked him to rescind a certain motion. If this was done the Mayor agreed to support him a I the Council meeting. Under .this understanding he rescinded the morion, only to find at the Council meeting that the Mayor brought down a fresh motion in opposition to him which motion he had “had in his pocket” at the time of asking him (Cr. Bryant) to reseiud Ihe motion at the committee meeting. Had tie known tliis he would never have rescinded the motion. If ■ ! was not for the expense incurred ,i.i another election, he , would resign from the Council.- * The Mayor said he was sorry for what had happened and sympathised wiih Cr. Bryant. He admitted t!iat he did not tell Cr. Bryant about the motion lie had had in view* when asking him to rescind the motion in question at the Finance Committee meeting. Cr. Bryant: “You devilled the whole thing at the Finance Committee meeting.” The Mayor: 1 apologise. I did not make things as clear as I.might have. I am sorry and hope you will accept my apology. I did not promise to support you if you rescinded,.the motion, however. Cr. Walker said lie was sure Cr. Bryant had a wrong impression of what had happened at the committee meeting. Cr. Bryant still contended that he had not had a fair deal “If you admit you should have taken me into your confidence,” he said, addressing the Mayor “I am prepared to let the matter drop.” The Mayor: I admit that. The matter wa/lhen dropped.
