A HORRIBLE CRIME.

THE MATAWAI OUTRAGE. Gisborne, last night. At the magistrate’s Court Robert Herbert Scott, was- charged with the murder on January 28th, of Gwendoline Catherine Murray, aged twelve years. The proceedings were very prolonged there being no fewer than thirty-seven witnesses. Evidence showed that the prisoner had worked at the Hicks Bay freezing works and was walking down to Gisborne for work. He was riven a lift in a motor ear to Gisborne. Later be walked to Makaraka, about three, miles from Gisborne, and on his way was met by a motorist ;i nd given a lift and money to lake the train to Matawai where ho said he was going to work.

Other veidence showed that accused enme bark to town and was seen later on the road to Makaraka and about eight o’clock, a man resembling accused was seen talking to the girl Murray who had been sent, by Iter mother on a message. The next morning the. giri was found murdered. The doctor’s evidence showed that the girl had been strangled and in his opinion out rayed. The Inspector of police gave evidence as to arresting accused near Motu, where accused made a statement to the police. In the statement accused said he met the girl who said she was frightened, and he offered to go a portion of the way with her. After going down I lie lane lie pushed the girl Aown and interfered with her. He had hold of her by the throat when he pushed her down. Site screamed nut and lie caught her by the throat. He sort of came to himself. She then moved and lie asked if she could hear him but she did nut answer. Hejhen realised what lie had done and ran away. On January 31st he fully realised his crime and gave himself up to the police. Accused was committed for trial.
