MAIN HIGHWAY THROUGH FOXTON.

DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON CHAIRMAN. At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor said he was arranging, through Mr Linklater, M.P., a deputation to wait on Mr J. Hannaj, Chairman of the No. 9 District of tlie Main Highways Board, re the highway coming through Foxton. An attempt was being made, said the Mayor, to divert the highway from Levin to Shannon, and thence through the Makerua swamp. There would be two routes through Levin, one leading on to Shannon and thence to Palmerston N. for Hawke’s Bay; the other route would be through Foxton and on to Taranaki and Auckland. It was of the utmost importance to Foxton that steps be taken to prevent any side-tracking. The various local bodies were taking a tally of the traffic passing through. The Foxton route was of importance to the Harbour Board and Manawatu County Council, who would co-oper-ate with the Cuncil in the matter. Cr. Coley criticised the method adopted by the Manawatu County Council in taking traffic tallies. He considered the tallies were not as complete as in other centres. The Mayor and Cr. Smith together with appointees by the Manawatu County Council and Hixbour Board, were appointed as a deputation to urge the Foxton route.
