RUBBISH REMOVAL AND STREET CLEANING.

RETAILERS’ ASSOCIATION WAIT ON COUNCIL. At last night’s Council meeting, Messrs Christie, Tongs and Winstanley, representing the Retailers’ Association, waited on the Council with a request that the present, method of cleaning Main Street by sweeping he stopped, and that the street he hosed down instead; also that a. more regular system of rubbish removal from business premises be instituted. The deputation pointed out that dust from the sweepings was detrimental to foodstuffs and goods. It was urged if the Main Street was hosed down occasionally it would do away with the dust nuisance. The accumulation of rubbish at the rear of the shops harboured vermin. It was also suggested that the street cleaning should he done before business' hours, as in other centres. The Mayor suggested that the shopkeepers should institute a system of rubbish removal from their business premises among themselves. The Town Clerk explained that a system of rubbish removal had been arranged by the Council, but owing to lack of support had fallen through. Cr. Coley explained that a man was employed for this work, but very few shopkeepers availed themselves of his services. The Mayor said that the Council would endeavour to minimise the dust nuisance consistent with finance. It would be unfair to rate people throughout the borough for a rubbish removal in Main Street. Cr. Ross said probably the flushing of Main Street on two days per week would be more economical than the present method of Saturdav cleaning. On the motion of Crs. Smith and Ross, it was resolved that the road foreman be instructed to clean up Main Street twice a. week, Wednesdays and Saturdays, the work to be started at 7.30 a.m.; also that arrangements he made for a trial of flushing the water channels, and that the water he measured so that the flushing can be discontinued if found too costly. The deputation thanked the Council and retired.
