THE HEMP MARKET
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE,
The High Commissioner’s cable, dated the sth inst., reads: “Hemp, Manila market, very firm, -with upward tendency. ‘.V grade afloat, sold at £36; Deeember-Mareh shipments at £35 10/- to £35 15/-. Output from the Ist January to the 31st December, 1923, was 1,487,000 bales against 1,275,000 for 1922. Stocks in Manila as at the 31st December. 137.000. against 151,000; stocks in Great Britain 16.144 bales as against 12.083. ‘•New Zealand market shows more activity and fair business has been done in fV»' ,rade at £33, Novomber- January -i.ininents Present quotations high points £35 10/-, fair £33 5/-.”
DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS
The grading returns for -hemp, tow stripner-tow and stripper-slips for'the month of December have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: Hemp. —The total number of bales graded was 6,255 as compared with 5,262 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 993 bales. For (lie twelve months ending 31st December, 1923, the number of bales graded was 61,151 compared with 60,487 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 664 bales.
Tow. —During the month 1,555 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,260 for the same month last year, an increase of 2D a bales. For the twelve months ending 31st December, 1923, the number of bales graded was 15.223, as compared with 15,225 for the previous twelve months, a deerea.se of two bales. Stripper-tow. —During the month 66 bales were graded as against nil in 1922. Stripper-Slips. —During the month 26 hales of stripper slips were graded as compared with 22 bales for lho flinty no ninth hiM year, an increase of four bales. For the twelve months ending 31st December, 1923, the number of hales graded was 122 as compared with 72 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 40 hales.

Piet oil: — 36 Wniroa 80 172 Thirty-four bales at Pieton were graded tine. Two bales at Auckland, 17 at Foxton, and 43 at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number of hales in eaeli grade, the number for the corresponding period of hist year being given in parenthesis:— Fine 34 (nil), good fair 1,502 ( 1,114), high fair 3481 (3,347), fair 1,118 (652), common 58 (63), rejected 62 (86), a total of 6,255 bal-

Auckland 1,180, Fox lon 1,306, Wellington 2,442, Blenheim 172, Bluff 272, Dunedin 262, Invercargill 240, Pieton 70, Wairoa 252. The following is the detailed particulars, of the tow graded:— ((.Ports •••Ist. 2nd. 3rd Auckland 48 157 65 Fox ton 32 246 Wellington 283 281 11 Blenheim 15 58 Bluff Proton 44 Dunedin Wairoa 52 Five hales at Auekland, six at Foxton,-20 at Wellington and one at Blenheim were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the* corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 474 (583), 2nd grade. 0.18 (570), 3rd grade 131 (75), condemned 32 (23), a total of 1.555 bales. The number of hales graded at each port were:—Auckland 275, Foxton 284, Wellington 595, Blenheim 74, Bluff 210, Pit-ton 44, Dunedin 21, Wairoa 52. St ripper- Tow.—Thirty-two hales at Wellington, were graded Ist grade and four hales third grade, flihirty hales at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Stripper-Slips.—Twenty-six bales at Auckland were graded 2nd. grade.
