FIRE IN NAPIER
- Napier, Last Night. While many thousands of people
were watching the Mardi Gras procession in the main streets this -----morning, an alarm of fire caused a diversion of traffic to the -vicinity of the post office, opposite which a two-storey wooden building was sending forth smoke and flames. The outbreak was confined to-the upper storey which was completely gutted. Good work by the brigade narrowly prevented the spread of the flames ,to other buildings, including the Clarendon Hotel. Sufferers through the fire are Messrs D. S. Laing and Son, indent agents, and the Warren Photographic Studios, The building w r as owned by Messrs Laing and insured for £2,500, and Messrs Lnings’ stock for £2,000, and office furniture for £370. Mr Warren’s stock and effects were covered by a policy for £450. _ Fusing of a - i light wire is supposed to be the ori- % gin of the outbreak.
