SWIMMING SPORTS

Although the weather was very inclement and the river more or less in flood, the committee decided to proceed with the sports yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall) officially opened the club " in the presence of a fair number of ' residents. The races, owing to the state of the river, had to be swum off in the basin at the south end of the wharf. The results of the races were as follows: — Breast .Stroke, 100 yards, five starters, If. McGregor 1, A. Fuller 2, E. Cunningham 3. Won by three yards, half-a-yard between 2nd and 3rd. Hundred yards open, W. Harrison 1, F. Lockwood 2, G. Perreau 3, Five starters. Won by six yards, until eight yards between second and third. Two Hundred yards, open, W. Harrison 1, G. Perreau 2. Four starters, only two of whom finished. Won by 25 yards. Backstroke, 50 yards:—H. Perreau 1, L. Smith 2, H. McGregor 3. Only starters. Boys, 18 and under, 75 yards:—. G. Perreau 1, A. Fuller 2, H. Fuller 3. Four starters. Won by two yards with one and a-half yards between second and third. The run-out interfered with the swimming a good deal, but the competitors must he congratulated on swimming under such adverse conditions. At the conclusion of the sports, the Mayor presented the trophies won and thanked all who had assisted in the carrying out of the programme.
