YOUNG MAN SHOT.
A PATEA SENSATION. The residents of Egrnont- St., Patea, were roused on Friday night, shortly after 11 o’clock, by the sound of a commotion in Mr A. Wong’s fruit shop, the hubbub being followed by a couple of revolver shots, in quick succession (says the Paten Press). Shortly afterwards, Wong came out to his front door in a very excited state, followed by a young man who had been badly hit in the leg by one of the shots. Wong’s version of the affair is that lie was in the act of undressing, when lie heard a noise in the hack of his shop, and called out, “Who’s there?” Receiving no reply, lie seized his revolver, which he keeps fn 11 v loaded in his bedroom, and again asked, “Who’s there?” adding that lie would shoot if no reply was given. After repeating his question several times he states that he fired into the darkness in the direction of the kitchen, in order to frighten the intruders, the shot hitting one of them in the leg. Wong then came out of his bedroom and, keeping his revolver poinied towards the kitchen, hacked to the front door and opened it. The injured man then rail down the street, the other intruder escaping by the back door. Wong states that had lie been answered when he called out he would not have fired. The young man, who was badly hit and had lost a considerable anionnt of blood, proceeded to Dr. Simmons, who, after dressing the wound, ordered him to the Hospital, where he is' progressing as favourably as can be expected. It lias been the .custom for young men requiring fruit, etc., from Wong’s shop to go round to the back of the shop, if the hour is late, and it was whilst on a mission of this nature that the unfortunate incident took place.
