RAILWAY V. MOTOR TRAFFIC.
MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL \ PROTESTS. “Three thousand cases of benzine were carted from Foxton to Palmerston North on Monday, the first dav on which heavy traffic was allowed," stated Cr. Barber al the. Manavfcalu County Council meeting on' Tuesday. “Cr. Barber wants us to make another atterßfit with the Railway Department,” remarked the chairman, Sir James Wilson. ~“Wc have always been told in the past when we approached it that the tariff is under consideration. How long has that been going on, Mr Drew?” The clerk: “Seventeen years to my knowledge.” At another stage in the meeting Mr Boyce observed that the Railway Department was always squealing about running the railways at a loss, but it seemed to him that it tried to do so. It was decided to write to the Department drawing its attention to the heavy cartage of benzine over the roads and- that wool was being carted to Wellington at a cheaper freight than by rail. This was also the case with butler and cheese, the rate agreed to by one company being 12/- a ton cheaper than by rail. The Council trusted that the amended tariff which has long been promised would soon be published.
