LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
FURTHER AOTTATION PROMISED. A WORK OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE. The proposed linking up of the. Alain Trunk line between Marlon and Levin was referred to by the local deputation which waited upon the Minister of Railways and Public Works during his visit lo Foxton yesterday.
Tn referring to this subject, Mr •T. Tv. Hornblow said that although they did not intend to press the claims of this route at present - as they realised that the Government had to provide means of road and railway access to many places where such were not provided, they would remind the Minister though that the matter ]in<l not been forgotten. The line, if constructed, would constitute a connecting link between Marton and Levin, and was regarded in the distret as a national work. He did not wish to adopt a “dog-iu-the manger” policy as far as Palmerston North was concerned, though he felt that eonsderatiop should he given to the construction of the line. He asked the Minister to consider this when looking at the railway alterations at Palmerston North and considering duplicating the lines. The connecting link won 1(1 relieve congestion at Palmerston North.
' Mr McVilley said the whole question of the line had been exhaustively gone into and had been found to he economically unsound from the standpoint of the Department. It would not pay the Department to construct the line, which would not recover in increased revenue the cost of construction.
