MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Manawatu County Council held at Sanson on Tuesday there were present Sir •Tames Wilson (chairman), Messrs W«. E. Barber, J. Boyce, IT. IT. Hunt, J. F. MeKelvie, IT. j. Fagan and W. S. Penny. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Department of Agriculture, drawing attention to the Council’s power to declare any plants in the second schedule of the. Noxious Weeds Act, except blackberry, and sweet briar, not noxious weeds.— Received. From the Department of Agriculture drawing at tention to the spread of goat’s rue tTrough the use of shingle from the Manawatu River, and asking that the Council eradicate it from its roads. —The Council’s roadmen to he instructed to eradicate the weed.

From the Orona County Council, advising that at a conference of the Rnngifikei, Pohangina, and Orona Counties, it was unanimously agree.] that uniform by-laws ho adopted. The Council was invited to appoint a delegate to a conference to ho held at the Council’s office at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 10, to draw up a set of joint by-laws.—Mr W. S. Penny and the clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) were appointed. From Mr J. Cruncher, Sanson, complaining of the delay that took place at Foxton in unloading goods arriving by boat for transit by the tram. Tf it continued the goods would probably be sent to Wanganui and carried by motor lorry over the county roads. —The cleric was instructed to approach the railway traffic manager at Wanganui in the matter, asking him to expedite the handling of goods at Foxton. GENERAL. The question of sick pay was discussed and a resolution passed to the effect that after full consideration the Council did not hold itself responsible to pay sick pay except in except ionalVasos. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported ns follows on the A wall on Riding:—The ratepayers on No. 6 lino wish the Council to raise a loan to form and metal the unmetalled portion of the above road, bong approximately 70 chains. The estimate for fho work v as about £OOO, Tramway. —The line had been adjusted and the necessary clearance provided, as required by (be Railway Department, opposite the water-tank at Sanson. Drains were now being cleaned out and provision made for carrying off storm water. Tin) points and crossings at Penny’s siding bad been put in order. Two new sets of 401 b. points and crossings bad been placed in position at Orona Downs siding, and the third set would lie put in during the present month. About 700 to 800 sleepers were required to link np the 401 b. track.—Adopted. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The chief items of traffic were: Merchandise 1061 tons, minerals and manure tons, cheese, etc., 67 tons; eggs 142 crates, timber 26,400 feet. Fares amounted to £1 10/8.

The accounts showed a debit of £164 0/4 for the month’s working, but included in the expenditure were extra items for re-tubing tlie boiler of locomotive “Manawatu.” This work had now born r*omplel<‘<l and the engine was in thorough working order. Several applications had been received for purchase of old rails, etc. The engineer suggested that all this material be collected and all not required for the Council’s use be sold, county ratepayers to have preference. Alterations in the rate roll were made as follows: Estate J. L. Nairn to Jas. Nairn, section 17, Sandon; Whitehead and others to C. G. Beattie, section 5 part 6, block I Douglas block; Robert and Good to Softly and Travers, section 226, 224/7, Sanson; Public Trustee to S. Y. Teag, section 235 Carnarvon,

Messrs Penny and Fagan were authorised to sign contract agreements except when otherwise specified,
