HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
THE SPRING SHOW
The local Horticultural Society is to be complimented upon the siyjf* cess of its recent show. Owing to" the resignation of the late secretary (Mr Frankland) some concern was expressed in obtaining the services of some one possessing the necessary enthusiasm in the society’s welfare to fill the vacancy. Relief was expressed in this connection when the committee announced that Airs Moore bad consented to till the breach. There is no need to comment on tiie splendid result of her work and with the committee’s hearty co-operation the future success of the society’s exhibitions is assured. The entries for this year s spring show were 65 in advance of last year’s. The judging throughout gave general satisfaction. Mr Gibson paid a fine tribute to the work of the stewards in staging the exhibits which, he said, were more up-to-date than obtained in larger centres. The attendance of the public was very satisfactory, both afternoon and evening. An increase is also reported this year in the membership role. The cookery section was not so fully represented this year although there were a good liumbex* of entries in the family cake section. Miss IT. Skellen, whose displays in past shows were always a feature of the cookery section, was unable to exhibit. this year on account of indisposition. Keen interest was displayed in the Citizens’ Trophy for bulbs. Last vear Mrs McMurray got a leg in and this year Airs A. S. Easton secured the honour. The trophy has to be won three.times before becoming the property of the exhibitor. Another local grower who is fast coining into front rank as an exhibitor, is Mrs Murphy and it would not surprise us to see her annex the trophy next year. The society is indebted to publicspirited townspeople for special prizes. A feature of the vegetable section was a mammoth cauliflower exhibited by Miss Ross. A special word of praise is due to Alesdames F. Procter and Heasman, who supervised the afternoon tea rooms and whose generous catering was favourably commented upon by patrons. Air Shaffer's instructive lecture on Bulb Cultivation was a good innovation. The Slimmer Show to be held in November, promises to lie a record exhibition.
The competition for the cake was won by Airs J. E. Tollison.
