A GENEROUS OFFER.
PLANS FOR PUBLIC READING ROOM AND LIBRARY. As is well-known, the Council erected the present Council Chamber with the insurance money obtained from the building destroyed by fire and which included a w r ell-equipped public reading room, library and caretaker’s living rooms. The ratepayers sanctioned a loan for the inclusion of such a place of public resort and to which the public library w’as removed and was destroyed. The Council although not unanimous, decided to rebuild the Council Chamber and exclude thelibrary and reading room out of the insurance money placed on deposit. The ratepayers were not consulted i.' : the matter and although the C"nnci! obtained legal sanction for their action the consensus of opinion was and is that they committed a moral injustice. At >ast night’s Council meeting, Mr M. R. Varnham, the architect of the Municipal Chambers, made a r, '--.erous offer to the Council to prepare plans of a public library ;.-..d reading room free of cost. Tie Council in accepting the off r, passe d a vote of thanks to Mr Varnham for his public-spirited and i- perous offer.
