A correspondent writes that when travelling 1 op a Californian coastal steamer she noticed that both olive oil and olives were placed op the table at every meal, a little olive oil being poured on the foods with a dash of vinegar. It was mentioned that the regular pse of this oil prevented consumption, and also that the fact of the lavish use of oil in Italy, Greece, and nmong the Jewish residents of these countries made them free, to a large extent, from rheumatism and appendicitis. When the writer returned from California she secured a gallon each of the best French and Italian oil, and used it freely on the food of her children, with the result that from being rather delicate, that they were strong and healthy, with a good colour. The writer considers that if oil was generally used in New Zealand there would tye a much higher standard Of health attained. She also remarks thftt California haying the same latitude as Auckland, has a great number of olive trees, which are a valuable asset. The advice is given that either French or Italian brands of oil should be used only, as they are the most palatable.

A man named Duncan, of Shannon, was admitted io the Palmerston North Hospital last night, suffering from fractured ribs, and injuries lo the skull. It is believed that the injured man, who is about 40 years of age, was driving a motor ear, which capsized at Shannon. His condition is serious.

At the annual meeting of shareholders of Hie Shannon Dairy Co. on Saturday the question of feeding rape and turnips to cows, and its effect upon butter, came up. One speaker stated there was a great tendency in Ibis district for farmers to grow this fodder. He stated several factory managers up North had refused to take milk from cows fed on turnips or rape, also the Government dairy officers did not approve of this feeding. He could not see why farmers would not go in more for growing barley, millet, lucerne, etc., from which good results can he obtained without the likelihood of affecting the quality of (he butter, and he certainly thought these crops should be grown instead. Mr Aim, the manager, on being asked his opinion on the matter, said turnips could be fed to a certain point. Most farmers grazed too hard.
