Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1923. CANCER SCOURGE.

THE British Ministry of Health, for the guidance of local authorities, has issued a memorandum summarising our present knowledge of the cancer scourge and the steps authorities may usefully take. The memorandum states that the recorded mortality has trebled in two generations, the most rapid increase in the death rate occurring in okl age. Hereditary predisposition has not yet been proved to be of practical importance, and it cannot be asserted with scientific (authority that any particular article of food increases or prevents liability to cancer, and no known drug or preparation will prevent or cure it. No danger has been proved from inhabiting houses or districts in which cancer has been prevalent, and there is no evidence that cancer is infectious or contagious. The essential point is that the patient should seek early medical advice, and not waste time on quack remedies. Causes of chronic irritation are by a clay pipe, irritation of the tongue by a .jagged tooth or a badly lifted tooth plate. Tt is prudent to remove any cause of irritation in special parts of the body, and thus diminished the risk.
